Description

Agave geminiflora (Twin-flowered Agave) is an single, short-stemmed, dwarf agave with narrow, dark green unarmed leaves that are very flexible. The leaves can grow to 60 cm in length and unlike the other agaves are not armed with thorns around their edges. Instead each leaf looks as if it is exuding tangled white threads. These leaves, which often number 100-200, cascade from the centre of the plant forming a very symmetrical, compact, dense rounded solitary rosette and somewhat broader. 

The species name ‘Geminiflora’, meaning “twin flowered” is in reference to the flower pairs. Mature geminiflora plants form very tall flower stalks. The impressive, branchless, on beautiful erect flower spike may stand 8′ to 12′ feet high emerging from the center of the plant. The flowers are 5 or 6 centimeters long. The flower colors are greenish yellow with a reddish or purple blush. The flowers grow in pairs on either side of a tall, straight unbranched spike.

Environment

Agave need full sun and gritty soil that percolates easily. They can even do quite well when potted but use an unglazed clay pot that will allow evaporation of excess moisture.

Water needs are moderate to light depending upon the heat of the season but the Cactus should be allowed to dry out before irrigation

In growing season they benefit from the application of a granulated time release fertilizer that will provide nutrient to the plant.

Landscape Uses

Agave Geminiflora is a very nice looking small plant that can work very well in containers in small spaces.
